SUDAN | A Forgotten War?
The civil war in Sudan is quickly becoming the world's most dire humanitarian crisis. While the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine are overshadowing it, the fighting in Sudan has escalated sharply over the past year, leading to mass displacement and widespread starvation. However, despite the gravity of the crisis, the conflict is receiving limited international attention, leading many to refer to it as a "forgotten war."
The Republic of Sudan, located in northeast Africa and bordering the Red Sea, is rich in history and cultural diversity. Its history includes periods under Ancient Egyptian domination, Christian Nubian kingdoms, the Ottoman Empire, and British Colonial rule. However, following independence in 1956, the new country was plunged into a prolonged and brutal civil war between the ...

Sudan: Silencing Women Rights Defenders
Sudanese security forces have used sexual violence, intimidation, and other forms of abuse, to silence female human rights defenders across the country. The government should investigate all alleged abuses, hold those responsible to account, and undertake legislative reforms to protect women’s rights.

However, following independence in 1956, the new country was plunged into a prolonged and brutal civil war between the Arab Muslim North and the African Christian South. This lasted until 2011, when South Sudan became independent. Since then, the country has also been affected by a brutal conflict in Darfur, where a brutal Arab militia, the Janjaweed, carried out genocide against local Sub-Saharan African ethnic groups. However, the current crisis emerged after the military overthrew the country’s longstanding dictator, Omar al Bashir, in 2019. Once close allies, the leaders of the coup have since fallen out. This has seen the Army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, come to blows with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Deputy Army Chief General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (also known as Hamedti). As the civil war enters its second year with no resolution in sight and the UN calls for billions in aid, the world remains distracted by other international events.

R*pe is increasingly being used as a weapon of war in Sudan - and the world is largely silent. The UN Human Rights Office in Sudan has tried to raise the alarm, saying the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary is the main perpetrator. In one cited case, as many as 20 women were reportedly abused in the same attack.
The actual number of those sexually assaulted is unknown because of electricity and Internet blackouts, and the conservative nature of Sudanese society - meaning many women are suffering in silence. But RSF fighters have been brazenly boasting about their crimes online. In one sickening video, a militia member praises the act of r*pe as something that he and his fellow RSF fighters are entitled to, arguing that Sudan is theirs and that they are entitled to anything within the country. Such material should be used as evidence at a future war crimes tribunal.
Data coming out of Sudan shows over 5,000 female recruits have joined the army, with many citing the increasing incidence of violations against women as their number-one motivation. It is worth noting, though, that the Sudanese army created the RSF and - before they were rivals - encouraged them to use rape as a weapon of war in the Darfur region of Sudan, but for many of the female recruits, there are very few options left.
They say, in all ways, women pay the heaviest price, and this is undoubtedly true in Sudan. Please keep your #eyesonSudan and raise your voice for our Sudanese sisters. They need our voices now more than ever.
